The Signature Drive into Istria
Leaving the airport, the route climbs onto the Karst plateau before the Adriatic opens up. The drive crosses briefly through Slovenia into Croatia - keep your passport or EU national ID within reach, as Slovenia currently runs occasional spot checks at the border. The salt pans of Sečovlje sit right at the crossing, flat and pale in any light, and then Istria's hills and vineyards take over. Terminal to Croatian countryside in under an hour.
Kempinski Hotel Adriatic in Savudrija is one of the first arrivals on the route. The hotel sits on the Istrian coast with the Golf Club Adriatic visible as you turn in from Umag. Guests heading south to Meneghetti Wine Hotel in Bale follow the coast road into wine country, the estate reached at the end of an unmarked lane off the main road. Grand Park Hotel and Monte Mulini in Rovinj arrive at the lower harbour entrance, a short walk from the old town waterfront.
